When it comes to cleaning the exterior of our house, this is something that needs a whole lot of work.
You can’t do such type of works every day like cleaning your living room or the shower.
For that reason, dust collected on the vinyl siding helps the growth of mold and mildew with the contact of moisture.
Droppings of the birds, oil, and greases we use in our cars also contribute to a dirty vinyl siding.
In this article, we are showing you the real reasons for a dirty vinyl siding and how can you clean that.
We have attached a video for a clear understanding of the cleaning concept, click here to watch it now.
Causes of Dirty Vinyl Siding
There are a lot of things that cause accumulation of dust on the vinyl siding. But we have sorted out 3 main things that contribute the most.
1. Dust as The Cause of Dirty Exterior
Vinyl sidings collect dust from the air. At present, air pollution is a big issue and it affects your house too. Dust flying in the air are attracted by the solid things like houses and trees.
If the area you are residing is highly air polluted, your house exterior will be affected faster by the dust and you will see stains appearing on the vinyl quickly.
Dust found in the air is mostly soil, sand, and industrial particles.
2. Mold and Mildew Contributes Too
As the dust accumulates, the moisture of the air helps the growth of mold and mildew. The more moisture the air carries, the faster will be the growth of mildew.
3. Oil and Grease is The Most Stubborn Dust
Most stubborn stains are made of oil and grease. If the fume of your kitchen is not properly filtered out to the outer world or you have a garage right next to your house, it is very likely to have stubborn oil and grease made stains.
These stains are hard to clean and can harm the overall look of your exterior.
Getting Ready To Work
1. Safety Equipment
Before you start work, you have to get safety equipment first. Put on safety goggles, have masks protecting your lungs, use hand gloves.
Most importantly, you have to wear safety belts when cleaning the upper side of the house.
2. Close House Openings
Close all the windows, doors and other openings of the house from where dust can accumulate into the house. If you have air conditioners installed outside, carefully seal them with plastic wrapper.
3. Avoid Direct Sunlight
Avoid exterior cleaning works in the direct sunlight. Pick a time slot when the sun is not out with full heat. If you are doing it on the vacation, early morning is the best time to do this.

Choosing The Right Cleaning Solution
In the vinyl siding cleaning process, you have to ensure an efficient cleaning solution to remove all kinds of dust and mildew. Here are some easy to make solutions-
1. Vinegar and Water Solution
Mix vinegar and water in a bucket. The solution should consist of ¾ water and ¼ vinegar. So, one liter of vinegar needs to be mixed with 3-liter water.
You can increase the vinegar amount slightly for better cleaning if you want. In such a case, it should not exceed 50%.
2. Bleach and Water
If you are not comfortable with the vinegar solution, then you can go with this. You have to mix 1-liter bleach with a gallon of water.
3. Readymade Cleaners
Readymade vinyl siding cleaners can be a go-to for you when you are in a hurry. Or if you want a comfortable hassle-free cleanup, store-bought vinyl cleaners will do the job for you.
4. Using detergent and Pressure Washer
If you do not have anything that we have discussed above but want to clean the vinyl siding. Then, the best alternative way is to use detergent and a pressure washer to clean the vinyl.
In that case, you have to be cautious about the pressure of the water. High-pressure water can lead to a broken wall.
5. Baking Soda Paste (Only for deep stains)
Add 50 percent water with 50 percent baking soda. Mix the soda and water to make a thick paste. This is a must-have solution along with any of the four we have outlined above. This paste will remove deep stains from the surface when the regular solution fails.
Vinyl Siding Cleaning Tips For Beginners
1. Divide the Surface into Different Sectors
Divide your exterior by different sectors. For example, you can start from a corner and divide every 10 feet surface.
Dividing the surface is important for the effective use of time and effort. This way you would not end up cleaning the same surface twice. And in terms of more than one stories wall or high walls, you have to divide the surface.
2. Brush the Siding with Solution
Take an abrasive brush, soak it in the solution and brush the siding with it. Take a brush that does not use any metal thing in it. This is to ensure that the brush does not scratch up the wall.
3. Apply Baking Soda Paste for Deep Stains
For deep stains that do not come out with brushing up the surface, use baking soda paste. Let the paste to sit on the surface for a few minutes.
Brush the surface with a sponge and rinse with water.
4. Use a Water Bucket or Hose
Use a water hose to thoroughly rinse the surface. You can use a water bucket also but the hose is the best, especially when you need to ride on the ladder to reach the high spots.
5. Microfiber Cloth for Drying out
You can use a microfiber cloth to wipe the surface or have a mop wrapped with a cloth. This way you can do the work faster.
If you want to skip the drying process, then the wet surface will catch up dust as quickly as you leave the exterior.
Things To Remember When Cleaning Vinyl Siding
- Don’t use metal or harsh scrubbers. These can scratch the vinyl siding. The perfect scrubber is the soft plastic ones and for deep stains, hard plastic scrubbers.
- Do not cross the recommended pressure of the pressure washer if you ever use it. Vinyl siding can take a bit of pressure but that is not unlimited. So, it is better to go with a solution without a pressure washer. If you have no choice then a pressure washer, use mild pressure.
- Put safety in the first place. The cleaning process is correlated with playing with dust and chemicals. You can’t expose your vulnerable internal and external organs to these harmful things. So, before you do any such work, complying with the safety guideline is a must.
